A proposition (a statement, sentence or assertion) that is aimed at supporting a conclusion in an argument. For example the proposition that ice cream has a high content of sugar could be used as a premise for the conclusion that ice cream is unhealthy. The argument that the premises are part of may look like this:
Premise 1: Ice cream is high in calories.
Premise 2: Anything high in calories is unhealthy.
Conclusion: Ice cream is unhealthy
